Quick overview

Can you live in Spain with the Digital Nomad Visa?

This visa is for non-EU citizens who work remotely using digital means. Employees must work for companies outside Spain. Freelancers can work with Spanish clients only if Spanish-source work does not exceed 20% of their activity.

If you are a non-EU national with a remote role at a foreign company, or a freelancer serving clients abroad, you may qualify. The key is proving your work is genuinely remote, your income is sufficient and stable, and your supporting documents meet the legal standard set by Spanish consulates and immigration authorities.

Quick answer — you likely qualify if:
  • Your income comes mainly from outside Spain
  • Your remote work is documented and verifiable
  • You meet the financial threshold for the main applicant and any family members
  • Your health insurance and social security coverage meet Spanish requirements
  • Your criminal record certificate and professional qualifications are in order

Financial threshold

How much income do you need?

The financial requirement for the Digital Nomad Visa is linked to the current Spanish minimum wage (SMI, Salario Mínimo Interprofesional), which is updated annually. For 2026, the SMI is €1,424.50 per month (based on 12 payments), giving an annual minimum of €17,094.

The main applicant needs 200% of the SMI, which equals €2,849 per month. Family members require additional amounts: the first family member adds 75% of the SMI (€1,068 per month), and each additional member adds 25% (€356 per month). These figures are subject to change, so you should verify the current threshold before planning your move.

Tax & Social Security

Taxes, Beckham Law and Social Security

Your visa and your tax position are connected, but they are not the same process. Getting the Digital Nomad Visa does not automatically mean you qualify for Beckham Law. Before moving, you should know whether you may apply for the special tax regime, how Spanish tax residency affects you and what social security route applies.

FAQ

Digital Nomad Visa Spain: frequently asked questions

How long does the Digital Nomad Visa Spain process take?
Processing times vary by consulate, typically between 1 and 3 months from submission of a complete file. In-country applications through UGE can sometimes be faster. We monitor status and follow up on your behalf throughout the process.
Can I apply for the Beckham Law as a digital nomad?
Not automatically. The Beckham Law special tax regime has its own eligibility requirements, including not having been resident in Spain in the previous 5 years. We review your full history and profile to confirm whether you qualify before you move.
Can I bring my family with the Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes. Spouse or partner and dependent children can be included in the application with additional income requirements per family member (75% of SMI for the first, 25% for each additional).
What happens if my employer refuses to authorize remote work from Spain?
Without a formal remote work authorization letter, your application is very likely to be refused. We can help you draft and negotiate this letter with your employer to maximize the chances of approval.
Do I need a Spanish bank account before applying?
No, a Spanish bank account is not required at the application stage. However, once in Spain and after obtaining your TIE, you will need one for registration and tax purposes.
Can I work for Spanish clients under the Digital Nomad Visa?
Yes, but Spanish-source work must not exceed 20% of your total professional activity. Exceeding this limit can put your visa status at risk.
What health insurance do I need for the Digital Nomad Visa?
You need private health insurance with full coverage in Spain, or proof of valid social security coverage such as an A1 certificate from your home country. We review your specific situation to confirm which option applies.
